Day 2: Drove 50 miles, took 7 deliveries, made $39 in tips. Pretty good average and everything went smoothly, no apts!
Day 3: I was called in to work today because of the big game. I debated with myself about going in or not and decided to make some dough (pun?).
So I went in to work at 5 expecting things to be super busy. Guess what. There's 4 drivers making boxes, not a good sign. I took 1 delivery in the first hour and got a $4 tip. Came back and made more boxes while waiting for more deliveries. Took another delivery about 20 minutes later, the bill was $16.20 and he gave me $20. Pretty good. Back to the restaurant.
Finally we're getting busy. This time I get to take a double. The first bill was $42 and he gave me $4, not bad. Next house, the bill is $31. There's 3 kids at the door and they run to tell their dad the pizza's here. I give the pizzas to their mom and she said she has no cash on her. The dad for some reason doesn't want to come out of his room, so I'm standing here at the door waiting. The kid comes up and hands me a $100. I told him I don't have change for this, do you have anything smaller? The kid runs back upstairs and says he needs something smaller. The dad, sounding a little annoyed, tells the kid just tell him to take it. The kid comes back downstairs and hands me the $100 and says "Keep It". I responded, "You sure?" "Yep." "You totally sure?" "Yep." So I took it. $69 tip.... I'm so happy I worked tonight!
I took 2 more deliveries after that and made another $9.
All in all I drove 50 miles and walked away with $99. I'd say pretty good for 3 hours...

Day 1, Thursday - 1/6/11
Okay. I just started a 2nd job as a delivery driver for a national pizza chain. Tuesday I went in to fill out paperwork and watched a video about the company, harmless. Wednesday I went on a few ridealongs with one of the experienced drivers and he trained me about finding addresses, procedures we have to follow, etc. It was extremely slow and we only took 4 deliveries, 1 pizza each, between 5:30-8:00 PM.
Now comes Thursday, January 6th. A day that will live in infamy.
So I came in at 5:30 ready to begin my first day on my own. I walked in to find out that someone had been fired yesterday for not having a sign on their car while they were delivering. There was also a manager working that I hadn't met yet. So he told me to put the sign on my truck before doing anything else. After putting up the sign, I walked back inside only to see the manager holding a pizza bag saying he already clocked me out to delivery and go go go.
My first delivery was to the Tatum/Union Hills area. Had no problem finding the address due to the awesome GPS navigation feature on my new Droid Incredible. Walked up to deliver the pizzas, and got a $6 tip on a $24 bill. I'm thinking to myself, "I think I'm going to like this..."
I get back to the restaurant and we're swamped and everyone's out on delivery. You have to take whichever delivery was ordered first and if there's something else on the way you can take that too. Of course the next delivery is off of Deer Valley a couple miles west of Tatum. As you can imagine there are no other deliveries close. So I took this one, once again easy to find with GPS. I got a $3 tip on another $24 bill. Not too bad. I came in hoping to average $3/delivery. Back to the restaurant.
What do you know, another delivery very far away and nothing close by. This time it's at Jomax/Tatum. So I took that delivery, made good time, and got a $4 tip. Good stuff. Onward!
At this point I'm feeling good and ready to take on more. To my surprise there's 3 deliveries ready all close by. They're apartments but that can't be too hard right? The manager goes usually we take 2 max but these are all close so if you think you can, take them. Of course I can! So I take all of them. The first one is a complex about a mile south of the restaurant off of Cave Creek. Does this complex have a map of where units are located? NO! So I spend 20 minutes walking around the complex looking for this apartment and ended up calling the store so the other driver could tell me where to go. I get to his door and pull out 3 boxes from the hotbag. And the receipt has 2 pizzas on it, wow. So I took some other delivery's pizza. So I give him the 2 pizzas and he tipped me $3. I wasn't expecting anything because at this point it's taken an hour.
On to the next complex off of Cave Creek. This one's easy to find and there's a map in the front. I get to her door and she takes the pizza and shuts the door. Then opens it up saying, I'm not paying for this, I talked to your manager. She seemed pissed, so I just said ok and left. Oh and this bag had 2 pizzas in it and she only ordered 1. Once again I've stolen someone else's pizza. Another pizza thrown in the backseat.
On to the 3rd complex off of Cave Creek, right by Bridgette's. Once again there's no map here. So I drive around a bit and can't see any numbers. I get out and there's a guy walking up saying it's his. So we go back to his apt and I explained it's my first day and sorry for the delay. He was very understanding and so was his wife. They gave me $5 on a $30 bill, sweet. Back to the restaurant.
As I walk in I say, "Am I fired?" Manager responds, "Nah man don't worry about it, it's your first day! Now take these 2 deliveries." At this point it's already 8 and I'm supposed to be done, but I don't have anything planned so I decided why not, might as well try to salvage the night. I look down and these are both to apartment complexes.
The first one is to one I went to before, with the girl who got the pizza for free. Finally I know where I'm going and there's a map of the units. So when I get to the door it's this young kid, maybe 18, his girlfriend I assume is sitting on the couch wiping tears away and it reeks of weed. Shot the breeze with the kid, said things like, it's been a crazy night, so busy, etc. It's a credit card charge, bill was $19. The kid tipped $8! I guess high people don't know what they're doing but I said thanks a lot and went on my way. This night is turning out to be alright after all.
Last delivery of the night, another complex about a 1/2 mile south of the first one. This one has a map, and the gate code on the receipt. So I drive in and park, guy walks up and says that's me. So I follow him to his apt, making small talk about how busy it was tonight, and once again, it reeks of weed. Dollar signs are flashing in my brain haha. The bill was $12 and he comes up with cash, but then goes back and gets more money for tip he said, and gave me $3. Not bad!
Back to the restaurant. First time cashing out and the manager tells me I owe him $73 bucks to even out the cash. I give him the money and only have $20 left, what's going on here? I asked him if the credit card tips go on my paycheck and he says no. So I go home, wondering what I did wrong. I tried to total everything up and it's just way off from what I was supposed to have. I write it off as first day stuff and vow to pay more attention going on.
Morning of 1/7/11. I pick up my pants from last night to get my jeans from under them for work. I feel something in the pocket, and sure enough, in the back pocket on the left, which I never use, is another $28 bucks. YES! I'm going to like this job I think.
Until next time,
Uel
